Classroom Management: Class Rules Goals Procedures Rewards and Incentives Consequences
Classroom Management
The main goal of my classroom is to provide a place where all of my students have the opportunity to learn and succeed. My students should feel that they are in a safe environment where they can grow, learn, and discuss things together. A classroom is a place where students spend a huge part of their life so it should reflect an atmosphere of fun, comfort, and should always feel safe. Students should be able to make mistakes, ask questions, and be themselves. Creating an inviting, exciting, stimulating classroom environment is one way to give the students that opportunity. I believe that all students have the capability to learn and experience success. It is our job as teachers to manipulate the environment of the classroom to support the needs of every student and learning style. This really starts with a meaningful, clear, and organized management plan. The goal of this plan is to maximize the success of my students by providing simple, clear rules, positive reinforcement, and consequences that students choose whether or not they need to partake in. |
First of all, my students will understand that they should not prevent their classmates from learning or me from teaching. As the teacher I have a huge responsibility. I need to know what is best for my students and I also need to hold high expectations for them. My philosophy of management aligns with Lee Canter’s assertive discipline model. Canter believes that assertive teachers react confidently and quickly in situations that require behavior management. They have a few clearly stated classroom rules and give firm, clear, and concise directions to students who are in need of outside control. Students who comply are reinforced, whereas those who disobey rules and directions make a choice to receive negative consequences.
One of the most important components of my philosophy is through reinforcement of praise and rewards my students will receive if they follow through with what’s expected of them. Not only do I believe in firm discipline, but I believe in motivating my students both extrinsically and intrinsically to choose the right behaviors. I believe that it is so important to encourage students every step of the way. Positive attitudes are contagious, and when the teacher models a positive attitude, the students will catch it!
It is also important that my students know what is expected of them. They should know and understand the classroom rules, consequences, and rewards for their actions. But they should also know that I have high expectations for them. My students should feel that their classroom is a safe learning environment where they can grow and discuss together. With the high expectations comes an opportunity for students to take risks and feel okay doing so. My classroom will understand that it is accepted to make mistakes. Those mistakes are only situations that can be learned from. In all the procedures and the rules, it’s of the utmost importance to be consistent. Irregular procedures can cause just as many problems as bad discipline. Maintaining the procedures that are set in place is a way to ensure that the class will run smoothly. As long as students know what you expect and you as the teacher model those expectations, the students will be in an environment that encourages learning and success! |
